To download a usable .zip file on your Mac, you must first change a setting in Safari:
Open Safari and go to Settings > General.
Uncheck the box for "Open 'safe' files after downloading".
If this is not disabled, Safari will automatically unzip the file into a folder, which is invalid for the update process. Doing this first will save you hours of confusion.
